39NOR HEIGHT NOR DEPTH NOR ANY CREATED THING OTHER WILL BE ABLE US TO SEPARATE FROM THE LOVE <THE> OF GOD <THE> IN CHRIST JESUS THE LORD OF US. 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1[THE] TRUTH I SPEAK IN CHRIST, NOT I AM LYING, WHILE IS BEARING WITNESS WITH ME THE CONSCIENCE OF MINE IN [THE] SPIRIT HOLY, Paul’s Concern for the Jews 1I speak the truth in Christ; I am not lying, as confirmed by my conscience in the Holy Spirit.
2THAT GRIEF TO ME IS GREAT AND UNCEASING SORROW IN THE HEART OF ME. 2I have deep sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.
3WAS WISHING FOR A CURSE TO BE [MY]SELF I MYSELF SEPARATED FROM <THE> CHRIST FOR THE BROTHERS OF MINE THE KINSMEN OF MINE ACCORDING TO [THE] FLESH; 3For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my own flesh and blood,
4WHO ARE ISRAELITES, WHOSE [IS] THE DIVINE ADOPTION AS SONS AND THE GLORY AND THE COVENANTS AND THE LAWGIVING AND THE SERVICE AND THE PROMISES, 4the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory and the covenants; theirs the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises.
5WHOSE [ARE] THE PATRIARCHS AND FROM WHOM [IS] <THE> CHRIST <THE> ACCORDING TO THE FLESH, WHO IS BEING OVER ALL GOD BLESSED TO THE AGES, AMEN. 5Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them proceeds the human descent of Christ, who is God over all, forever worthy of praise!*NoteCloseOr forever blessed Amen.
6[IT IS] NOT AS HOWEVER THAT HAS FAILED THE WORD <THE> OF GOD. NOT FOR ALL WHO [ARE] OF ISRAEL [ARE] THESE ISRAEL; God’s Sovereign Choice (Genesis 25:19–28; Malachi 1:1–5) 6It is not as though God’s word has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.
7NOR BECAUSE THEY ARE SEED OF ABRAHAM [ARE] ALL CHILDREN, RATHER IN ISAAC WILL BE NAMED TO YOU OFFSPRING. 7Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants are they all his children. On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”*NoteCloseGenesis 21:12
8THAT IS NOT THE CHILDREN OF THE FLESH THESE [ARE] CHILDREN <THE> OF GOD, BUT THE CHILDREN OF THE PROMISE ARE REGARDED AS OFFSPRING. 8So it is not the children of the flesh who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as offspring.
9OF [THE] PROMISE FOR THE WORD [IS] THIS: AT <THE> TIME THIS I WILL COME AND THERE WILL BE <THE> TO SARAH A SON. 9For this is what the promise stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”*NoteCloseGenesis 18:14
10NOT ONLY THEN, BUT ALSO REBECCA BY ONE CONCEPTION HAVING ISAAC THE FATHER OF US; 10Not only that, but Rebecca’s children were conceived by one man, our father Isaac.
11NOT YET FOR HAVING BEEN BORN NOR HAVING DONE ANYTHING GOOD OR EVIL, SO THAT THE ACCORDING TO ELECTION PURPOSE <THE> OF GOD MAY STAND, 11Yet before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad, in order that God’s plan of election might stand,
12NOT OF WORKS BUT OF THE [ONE] CALLING, [12] IT WAS SAID TO HER THAT THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER; 12not by works but by Him who calls, she was told “The older will serve the younger.”*NoteCloseGenesis 25:23
13EVEN AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN: <THE> JACOB I LOVED, <THE> BUT ESAU I HATED. 13So it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”*NoteCloseMalachi 1:2–3
14WHAT THEN WILL WE SAY? NOT INJUSTICE WITH <THE> GOD [IS THERE]? NEVER WOULD IT BE! 14What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Certainly not!
15<THE> TO MOSES FOR HE SAYS: I WILL SHOW MERCY TO WHOM MAYBE I MAY SHOW MERCY AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM MAYBE I MAY HAVE COMPASSION. 15For He says to Moses: “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”*NoteCloseExodus 33:19
16SO THEN [IT IS] NOT OF THE [ONE WHO IS] WILLING NOR OF THE [ONE WHO IS] RUNNING BUT OF THE [ONE WHO IS] SHOWING MERCY OF GOD. 16So then, it does not depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.
17SAYS FOR THE SCRIPTURE <THE> TO PHARAOH THAT FOR THIS VERY THEREFORE I HAVE RAISED UP YOU SO THAT I MAY SHOW IN YOU THE POWER OF MINE AND THAT MAY BE DECLARED THE NAME OF ME IN ALL THE EARTH. 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”*NoteCloseExodus 9:16 (see also LXX)
18SO THEN TO WHOM HE WANTS HE SHOWS MERCY, WHOM NOW HE WANTS HE HARDENS. 18Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy and He hardens whom He wants to harden.
19YOU WILL SAY TO ME THEN: WHY THEN STILL DOES HE FIND FAULT? THE FOR PURPOSE OF HIM WHO HAS BEEN RESISTING? 19One of you will say to me, “Then why does God still find fault? For who can resist His will? ”
20O MAN, BUT RATHER, YOU YOURSELF WHO ARE WHO IS ANSWERING AGAINST <THE> TO GOD? NOT WILL SAY THE THING FORMED TO THE [ONE] HAVING FORMED [IT]; WHY ME DID YOU MAKE LIKE THIS? 20But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, “Why did You make me like this?”*NoteCloseIsaiah 29:16; Isaiah 45:9
21OR NOT HAS AUTHORITY THE POTTER OVER THE CLAY OUT OF THE SAME LUMP TO MAKE ONE INDEED UNTO HONOR VESSEL ONE HOWEVER UNTO DISHONOR? 21Does not the potter have the right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for special occasions and another for common use?
22WHAT IF NOW DESIRING <THE> GOD TO SHOW THE WRATH AND TO MAKE KNOWN THE POWER OF HIM BORE WITH MUCH PATIENCE [THE] VESSELS OF WRATH FITTED FOR DESTRUCTION, 22What if God, intending to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great patience the vessels of His wrath, prepared for destruction?
23ALSO THAT HE MAY MAKE KNOWN THE RICHES OF THE GLORY OF HIM UPON [THE] VESSELS OF MERCY WHICH HE PREPARED BEFOREHAND FOR GLORY? 23What if He did this to make the riches of His glory known to the vessels of His mercy, whom He prepared in advance for glory—
24WHOM EVEN HE HAS CALLED US NOT ONLY OUT FROM [THE] JEWS BUT ALSO OUT FROM [THE] GENTILES, 24including us, whom He has called not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles?
25AS ALSO IN <THE> HOSEA HE SAYS: I WILL CALL THAT WHICH [IS] NOT PEOPLE OF MINE PEOPLE OF MINE AND HER WHO NOT LOVED LOVED. 25As He says in Hosea: “I will call them ‘My People’ who are not My people, and I will call her ‘My Beloved’ who is not My beloved,”*NoteCloseHosea 2:23
26AND IT WILL HAPPEN THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM; NOT PEOPLE OF MINE [ARE] YOU YOURSELVES, THERE THEY WILL BE CALLED SONS OF GOD [THE] LIVING. 26and, “It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people, ’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”*NoteCloseHosea 1:10
27ISAIAH ALSO CRIES OUT CONCERNING <THE> ISRAEL: THOUGH SHALL BE THE NUMBER OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL AS THE SAND OF THE SEA, [ONLY] THE VESTIGE WILL BE SAVED; 27Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the Israelites is like the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved.
28[THE] SENTENCE FOR CONCLUDING AND BRINGING SWIFTLY IN RIGHTEOUSNESS FOR WORD BROUGHT SWIFTLY WILL PERFORM [THE] LORD UPON THE EARTH. 28For the Lord will carry out His sentence on the earth thoroughly and decisively.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 10:22–23 (see also LXX)
29AND EVEN AS HAS FORETOLD ISAIAH: ONLY UNLESS [THE] LORD OF HOSTS HAD LEFT US DESCENDANTS, LIKE SODOM THEN WE SHOULD HAVE BECOME AND LIKE GOMORRAH THEN WOULD WE HAVE BEEN MADE. 29It is just as Isaiah foretold: “Unless the Lord of Hosts had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom, we would have resembled Gomorrah.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 1:9 (see also LXX)
30WHAT THEN WILL WE SAY? THAT GENTILES <THE> NOT PURSUING RIGHTEOUSNESS HAVE GRASPED RIGHTEOUSNESS, RIGHTEOUSNESS NOW THAT [IS] BY FAITH; Israel’s Unbelief 30What then will we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;
31ISRAEL HOWEVER PURSUING A LAW OF RIGHTEOUSNESS TO [THAT] LAW RIGHTEOUSNESS NOT DID ATTAIN. 31but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it.
32BECAUSE OF WHY? BECAUSE [IT WAS] NOT BY FAITH BUT AS BY WORKS OF LAW; THEY STUMBLED FOR OVER THE STONE <THE> OF STUMBLING 32Why not? Because their pursuit was not by faith, but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone,
33EVEN AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN: BEHOLD I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND EVERYONE WHO IS BELIEVING ON HIM NEVER WILL BE PUT TO SHAME. 33as it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense;*NoteCloseIsaiah 8:14 and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 28:16 (see also LXX)
