65FOR HE HAD SAID YAHWEH OF <THE> THEM CERTAINLY <TO DIE> THEY WILL DIE IN THE WILDERNESS AND NOT HE WAS LEFT OF <THE> THEM ANYONE THAT EXCEPT CALEB [THE] SON OF JEPHUNNEH AND JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN 65For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
1AND THEY DREW NEAR [THE] DAUGHTERS OF ZELOPHEHAD [THE] SON OF HEPHER [THE] SON OF GILEAD [THE] SON OF MAKIR [THE] SON OF MANASSEH OF [THE] CLANS OF MANASSEH [THE] SON OF JOSEPH AND THESE [WERE] [THE] NAMES OF DAUGHTERS HIS MAHLAH NOAH AND HOGLAH AND MILCAH AND TIRZAH The Daughters of Zelophehad (Numbers 36:1–13) 1Now the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. These were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They approached
2AND THEY TOOK THEIR STAND <TO> BEFORE MOSES AND <TO> BEFORE ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND <TO> BEFORE THE LEADERS AND ALL THE CONGREGATION [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] TENT OF MEETING <TO> SAYING 2the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the whole congregation, and said,
3FATHER OUR HE DIED IN THE WILDERNESS AND HE NOT HE WAS IN AMONG THE COMPANY WHICH GATHERED ON YAHWEH IN [THE] COMPANY OF KORAH FOR IN OWN SIN HIS HE DIED AND SONS NOT THEY BELONGED TO <THE> HIM 3“Our father died in the wilderness, but he was not among the followers of Korah who gathered together against the LORD. Instead, he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons.
4<TO> WHY? WILL IT BE WITHDRAWN [THE] NAME OF FATHER OUR FROM AMONG CLAN HIS FOR NOT [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM A SON GIVE! TO <THE> US A POSSESSION IN AMONG [THE] BROTHERS OF FATHER OUR 4Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan because he had no sons? Give us property among our father’s brothers.”
5AND HE BROUGHT NEAR MOSES <OBJ.> CASE THEIR <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH 5So Moses brought their case before the LORD,
7RIGHT [THE] DAUGHTERS OF ZELOPHEHAD [ARE] SPEAKING CERTAINLY <TO GIVE> YOU WILL GIVE TO <THE> THEM POSSESSION OF AN INHERITANCE IN AMONG [THE] BROTHERS OF FATHER THEIR AND YOU WILL MAKE PASS OVER <OBJ.> [THE] INHERITANCE OF FATHER THEIR TO <THE> THEM 7“The daughters of Zelophehad speak correctly. You certainly must give them property as an inheritance among their father’s brothers and transfer their father’s inheritance to them.
8AND TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL YOU WILL SPEAK <TO> SAYING A MAN IF HE WILL DIE AND A SON NOT [BELONGS] TO <THE> HIM AND YOU WILL MAKE PASS OVER <OBJ.> INHERITANCE HIS TO DAUGHTER HIS 8Furthermore, you shall say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, you are to transfer his inheritance to his daughter.
9AND IF NOT [BELONGS] TO <THE> HIM A DAUGHTER AND YOU WILL GIVE <OBJ.> INHERITANCE HIS TO BROTHERS HIS 9If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.
10AND IF NOT [BELONG] TO <THE> HIM BROTHERS AND YOU WILL GIVE <OBJ.> INHERITANCE HIS TO [THE] BROTHERS OF FATHER HIS 10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
11AND IF NOT BROTHERS [BELONG] TO FATHER HIS AND YOU WILL GIVE <OBJ.> INHERITANCE HIS TO RELATIVE HIS <THE> NEAR TO HIM FROM OWN CLAN HIS AND HE WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> IT AND IT WILL BECOME FOR [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <INTO> A STATUTE OF JUDGMENT JUST AS HE HAS COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> MOSES 11And if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the next of kin from his clan, that he may take possession of it. This is to be a statutory ordinance for the Israelites, as the LORD has commanded Moses.’”
12AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES GO UP TO [THE] MOUNTAIN OF THE ABARIM <THE> THIS AND SEE <OBJ.> THE LAND WHICH I HAVE GIVEN TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL Moses Requests a Successor (Deuteronomy 3:23–29) 12Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain of the Abarim range*NoteCloseLXX Go up Mount Nebo beyond the Jordan and see the land that I have given the Israelites.
13AND YOU WILL SEE <OBJ.> IT AND YOU WILL BE GATHERED TO PEOPLE<S> YOUR ALSO YOU JUST AS HE WAS GATHERED AARON BROTHER YOUR 13After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was;
14<AS> SINCE YOU REBELLED AGAINST MOUTH MY IN [THE] WILDERNESS OF ZIN IN [THE] STRIFE OF THE CONGREGATION TO TREAT AS HOLY ME AT THE WATERS TO EYES THEIR THEY [WERE] [THE] WATERS OF MERIBATH KADESH [THE] WILDERNESS OF ZIN 14for when the congregation contended in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against My command to show My holiness in their sight regarding the waters.” Those were the waters of Meribah*NoteCloseMeribah means quarreling; see Exodus 17:7. in Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin.
16LET HIM APPOINT YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF THE SPIRITS OF ALL FLESH A MAN OVER THE CONGREGATION 16“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation
17WHO HE WILL GO OUT <TO> BEFORE THEM AND WHO HE WILL COME <TO> BEFORE THEM AND WHO HE WILL LEAD OUT THEM AND WHO HE WILL BRING THEM AND NOT IT WILL BE [THE] CONGREGATION OF YAHWEH LIKE <THE> SHEEP WHICH NOT [BELONGS] TO <THE> THEM A SHEPHERD 17who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
18AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES TAKE FOR <THE> YOURSELF <OBJ.> JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN A MAN WHOM A SPIRIT [IS] IN <THE> HIM AND YOU WILL LAY <OBJ.> HAND YOUR ON HIM Joshua to Succeed Moses (Deuteronomy 31:1–8) 18And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man with the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.
19AND YOU WILL MAKE STAND <OBJ.> HIM <TO> BEFORE ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND <TO> BEFORE ALL THE CONGREGATION AND YOU WILL COMMISSION <OBJ.> HIM TO EYES THEIR 19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, and commission him in their sight.
20AND YOU WILL PUT SOME OF MAJESTY YOUR ON HIM SO THAT THEY MAY HEAR ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 20Confer on him some of your authority, so that the whole congregation of Israel will obey him.
21AND <TO> BEFORE ELEAZAR THE PRIEST HE WILL STAND AND HE WILL ENQUIRE FOR <THE> HIM BY [THE] JUDGMENT OF THE URIM <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH ON MOUTH HIS THEY WILL GO OUT AND ON MOUTH HIS THEY WILL COME HE AND ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WITH HIM AND ALL THE CONGREGATION 21He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for him before the LORD by the judgment of the Urim.*NoteCloseLiterally the Lights At his command, he and all the Israelites with him— the entire congregation— will go out and come in.”
22AND HE DID MOSES JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> HIM AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> JOSHUA AND HE MADE STAND HIM <TO> BEFORE ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND <TO> BEFORE ALL THE CONGREGATION 22Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. He took Joshua, had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation,
23AND HE LAID <OBJ.> HANDS HIS ON HIM AND HE COMMISSIONED HIM JUST AS HE HAD SPOKEN YAHWEH BY [THE] HAND OF MOSES 23and laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD had instructed through Moses.
